Did you know there are medications that can be used to treat COVID-19 whilst at home?

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR ORAL COVID-19 MEDICATION?

 Based on government recommendations, as of 1st March 2024, if you become COVID positive and are:

  • 70 years+ : Any person 70 years or older
  • 50-69 years: with 2 risk factors for severe disease
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander : 30 years or older with 1 risk factor for severe disease 
  • Immunocompromised : 18 years or older who are moderately to severely immunocompromised. Details of conditions considered immunocompromised can be found at https://www.health.gov.au/health-alerts/covid-19/treatments/eligibility
  • Any person 18 years or older :  Any person 18 years or older who has experienced past COVID-19 infection resulting in hospitalisation
WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS?
  • Conditions affecting your lungs or heart
  • Conditions affecting your nervous system, such as dementia or stroke
  • Diabetes
  • Kidney or liver disease
  • Being very overweight
  • Living remotely with limited access to higher level healthcare
  • ​​​​​​​Living in a nursing home or disability residential facility
WHAT STEPS SHOULD I TAKE IF I HAVE COVID-19 SYMPTOMS?

Although testing and reporting are no longer mandatory in many states, they may be recommended. Here are some steps you can take:

  1. Test: If you suspect you have COVID-19, do a rapid antigen test (RAT). Your doctor may also provide a PCR referral
  2. Treat: If you test positive, talk to your doctor to see if you are eligible for a COVID-19 antiviral medicine

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO TEST EARLY?
  • If you test positive, you may be eligible for an oral COVID-19 medicine to help fight the infection and prevent severe illness.
  • For those who are eligible, these oral medicines must be started as soon as possible and within 5 days of noticing your symptoms.
