Research Fellowships
Pfizer Australia has a long history of investing in R&D by supporting partnerships and collaborations with key research institutions, as well as supporting philanthropic initiatives such as providing fellowships and grants to support individual researchers and their research projects in the areas of cardiovascular medicine, neuroscience, oncology and endocrinology.
Regrettably, we are scaling back these activities, due to long-expected changes to our business. These changes are driven by the loss of exclusivity of a number of key Pfizer medicines over the coming years, which will result in some erosion of our revenues from these medicines.
The scaling back of our Australian activities also reflects actions we are taking around the world. While we regret this reduction in our activities, Pfizer remains strongly committed to R&D investment and, globally, expects to spend US$6.5 to US$7.0 billion to R&D activities in 2012.
We are suspending our Fellowship program for 2011. We will of course continue to support all existing seven fellows who are currently at various stages through their individual five year, $1 million programs.
Since its establishment in 2003, the Fellowship program has committed more than $16 million to fund Australia’s up and coming scientists.
