Pfizer alerts public to counterfeit batch of Viagra 100MG
Sydney, June 21 2010 – Pfizer Australia is alerting the public to the presence of a counterfeit batch of Viagra-100mg-4-tablet-packs which has entered via the wholesaler/pharmacy supply chain. The batch in question was not sourced from Pfizer Australia which is the only authorised manufacturer and supplier of Viagra in Australia.
As a result, Pfizer took the initiative and wrote to doctors and pharmacists alerting them to the presence of this counterfeit stock and advised them to quarantine this batch.
The counterfeit boxes contain 4 x 100mg tablets, and can be identified by the batch number 314 833 021 with an expiry date of 04/2012. This information can be found embossed on the white left hand panel of the carton flap. In addition, the batch number and expiry date are located on the outside edges of the tablet blister. This is the only identified affected batch of products. Other strengths and box sizes are not affected by this recall.
There is no evidence to date to indicate this counterfeit product is harmful. Complaints received by Pfizer have so far only indicated a lack of overall efficacy of the product.
Many counterfeit medicines contain no active ingredient; too much active ingredient; the wrong active ingredient or even contaminants which could potentially be harmful.
Patients are advised not to use counterfeit Viagra from the affected batch, and to return the counterfeit Viagra to the pharmacy from which they purchased it as soon as possible.
If you believe you have been exposed to this product, please speak to your doctor or pharmacist.
Any adverse events that may be related to the use of these products should be reported to Pfizer or to the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).
Pfizer Australia takes distribution of its medicines extremely seriously and is working with the TGA which has initiated an investigation into how this counterfeit product bearing Pfizer’s name reached the Australian market place and consumers.
