Port Melbourne epilepsy researcher wins neuroscience award

Friday July 27, 2007

Psychiatrist, Dr Cameron Lacey, has been awarded a Pfizer Australia Neuroscience (NSR) grant worth up to $55,000 for research into the increased rate of depression in patients with epilepsy.

Dr Lacey was acknowledged at the 5 th Annual Pfizer Australia NSR awards ceremony at the Sydney Hilton on Friday, July 27.

An Australian Physicians Independent Committee (APIC) determined the winning NSR grants for proposals for basic and clinical research across the broad field of neuroscience, including but not necessarily confined to psychiatry, pain medicine and neurology.

Dr Lacey, whose research is conducted in Tasmania using the internationally unique Tasmanian Epilepsy Register, combines the latest neurological and psychiatric findings to examine which may be important in contributing to the development of depression. Depression is the most common psychological condition associated with epilepsy.

Dr Lacey said: “the data from this study can be used in future to investigate other important co-existing psychological conditions such as anxiety, psychosis, personality dysfunction and cognition.”
