Friday July 27, 2007

North Melbourne researcher Dr Natasha Brown has been awarded a Pfizer Australia Neuroscience (NSR) grant worth up to $55,000 for research into autism.

Dr Brown was acknowledged at the 5 th Annual Pfizer Australia NSR awards ceremony at the Sydney Hilton on Friday, July 27.

An Australian Physicians Independent Committee (APIC) determined the winning NSR grants for proposals for basic and clinical research across the broad field of neuroscience, including but not necessarily confined to psychiatry, pain medicine and neurology.

Dr Brown will study l arge families where numerous members displayed features of Autism Spectrum Disorder and attempt to identify inheritance patterns of these cognitive and behavioural traits.

“This work may lead to identification of genes that are responsible for causing A.S.D. This approach has been successful in identifying causative genes for other complex disorders such as epilepsy,” Dr Natasha Brown Said.
