Epilepsy researcher wins neuroscience award

Royal Melbourne Hospital researcher Dr Sophie Adams, has been awarded a Pfizer Australia Neuroscience (NSR) grant worth up to $55,000 for research into aspects of mental illness associated particularly with psychiatric symptoms associated with epilepsy.
Dr Adams was acknowledged at the 5 th Annual Pfizer Australia NSR awards ceremony at the Sydney Hilton on Friday, July 27.
An Australian Physicians Independent Committee (APIC) determined the winning NSR grants for proposals for basic and clinical research across the broad field of neuroscience, including but not necessarily confined to psychiatry, pain medicine and neurology.
Dr Adams, who believes that her research will provide important insights into the clinical and structural brain variables associated with the development and prognosis of psychiatric symptoms associated with epilepsy.
Dr Adams said: “the study builds on baseline data taken from patients at the Royal Melbourne Hospital between 1993 and 2004, and will potentially reveal information that will help us understand the development of some types of mental illness.”
